Come worship with us! We believe worship
is the central act of the people of God!
Worship at MDPC is upbeat and inspirational and is the hub from which prayer, study, service, stewardship, care for one another, fellowship, evangelism, and servant leadership emerge.

Sunday morning worship services are held at 8:30, 9:45 and 11:15 a.m. The first two services feature contemporary hymns and songs of praise. The third service is more traditional, featuring familiar hymns and liturgy. The sermon message is the same at all services.

Shuttle buses bring worshipers to the church each Sunday from two locations: Shuttle bus transportation is available with pick-ups at Memorial High School and First Bank Texas beginning at 9:15. Last shuttle buses depart MDPC at 1:00PM on regular Sundays and 1:30PM on Sundays when lunch is served.
MDPC practices open communion - all baptized individuals are invited to share in the Lord's Supper.

Listen to SERMONS. If you are unable to attend Sunday morning worship, you may wish to listen to a Sunday sermon on our website in the Media section.

Sermon study notes may be viewed or printed out from that location.

Welcome to Memorial Drive Presbyterian Church (MDPC), located on the west side of Houston at the corner of Memorial Drive and Blalock. Our address is 11612 Memorial Drive, Houston, TX 77024, and our telephone number is 713-782-1710.

We are a congregation of real live people who face real live problems with hope and joy because of the powerful presence of Jesus Christ whose loving Spirit we encounter each day. We have been drawn together into a caring family, and out of gratitude for all that Christ is doing for us, we seek to serve others.

This online resource provides a brief sketch of the church's life. To get a full picture, come join us as we share the wonder of living in Christ's fellowship. We hope the navigation of our site is intuitive and that you will find the information you are seeking as well as sense the spirit of our congregation. A word that may be helpful in your tour: the buttons across the top of our home page point to things you may do, with a second line denoting demographics. Along the left side of the home page, the buttons lead to more general information and thoughts about the Christian faith. Let’s start with links to information that tells you:

Who We Are:

Even as a large church (4500 members), Memorial Drive Presbyterian Church is known for its warmth, generosity, and dedication in seeking to continue the ministry of Jesus Christ in the church, the community and the world. MDPC is one of the ten largest congregations in the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.). Presbyterians are distinctive in two major ways: they adhere to a pattern of religious thought known as Reformed theology and a form of government that stresses the active, representational leadership of both ministers and church members. Presbyterians trace their history to the 16th century and the Protestant Reformation. Our heritage, and much of what we believe, began with the French lawyer John Calvin (1509-1564), whose writings crystallized much of the Reformed thinking that came before him. Some of the principles articulated by John Calvin remain at the core of Presbyterian beliefs. Among these beliefs are:

  • the sovereignty of God
  • the authority of the scripture
  • justification by grace through faith
  • the priesthood of all believers

Our knowledge of God and God's purpose for humanity comes from the Bible, particularly what is revealed in the New Testament through the life of Jesus Christ.

Our Founding Principles:

Memorial Drive Presbyterian Church was founded on two basic principles that we still hold dear today.

  • First, our house shall be called a house of prayer. (Matthew 21:13) Prayer guides our major policy decisions as well as our everyday lives. Our Partners in Prayer commit to fulfilling our goal that every member be prayed for every day.
  • Second, in obedience to Christ's teaching, we are committed to a Dollar-for-Dollar benevolence program. Since our beginning in 1954 and continuing to the present, we annually set a goal of matching the money spent in the operation of the church and its programs with giving to those in need in the community and the world.

Our History:

On Sunday, January 9, 1955, seventy persons gathered in the Memorial Drive Elementary School, beyond the then western city limits of Houston, Texas, to hold the first worship services of Memorial Drive Presbyterian Church. From that modest beginning, the church grew rapidly, as the surrounding area filled with new famlies. Membership rolls passed 500 in 1957; 1,000 in 1960; 2,000 in 1965; 3,000 in 1969. These numbers reflected the community response to the new congregation, led by Dr. Charles Shedd. The fourth anniversary of the church was celebrated by 1,044 worshipers in a new Sanctuary/Fellowship Hall built on six acres at the intersection of Memorial Drive and Blalock. The present Sanctuary was built in 1972. New classrooms, a chapel, parlor, kitchen, and fellowship hall were added in the early 1990s. A remodeling of the Sanctuary, a new Church Life Center, new office space, and renovation of many classrooms were dedicated in 2002. The church celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2005 and continues the historic challenge of high expectations of members to continue their growth through study, prayer, stewardship, and outreach.

Our Mission Statement and Vision:

For several years, MDPC’s mission has been “to continue the earthly ministry of Jesus Christ by recruiting disciples for the kingdom of God, renewing disciples in their faith commitments, and reaching out in love and compassion to a world in need.”

In celebration of MDPC’s 50th anniversary in 2005 and in anticipation of our next 50 years of ministry, we have adopted a new vision based on Hebrews 12:15a: “See to it that no one fails to obtain the grace of God”. We’ve been richly blessed by God in our first 50 years and we feel called by Him to be even more intentional about growing in grace and sharing that grace with others in the years to come. To do so, we believe that God is challenging us to cultivate 5 Growing EDGES:

  • Evangelistic Growth
  • Discipleship Passion
  • Generous Lifestyle
  • Empowered Relationships
  • Students of Society

These 5 Growing EDGES are focus areas for us to apply the vision in our individual lives, on our campus, and throughout the world. We’ve realigned our ministry areas and programs around our Growing in Grace vision and we are excited to see what God will do next in and through MDPC.

Our Beliefs: Our identity is shaped by these beliefs:

  • We continually seek the will of God, believing that God is always offering people creative ways to serve in the church and in the world. We believe we must take risks as we respond to God's challenges.
  • We believe worship is the central act of the people of God. Worship is highly participatory and is the hub from which prayer, study, service, stewardship, care for one another, fellowship, evangelism, and servant leadership emerge.
  • Following the guidance of the Westminster Confession, we affirm that the Holy Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments are the Word of God, the only rule of faith and obedience. We acknowledge that the Bible is a record of God's continuing loving relationship with humanity, as well as a rich source of guidance for our lives.
  • We believe that prayer is a dialogue with God that provides nourishment and strength for living. As we respond to God's activity in the world and in our lives, we bring to God our deepest concerns and submit them to God's sovereign will.
  • We feel we have an obligation to provide a Christian education program through which every child, youth, and adult can understand the basic doctrine of the Christian faith, apply the teachings of the Bible to the practical situations of our lives, and grow toward Christian maturity.
  • We believe that every Christian is called to worship God regularly, to discover God's love and God's will, and to demonstrate God's love to others.
  • We believe that the biblical concept of percentage giving is a joyful response to God's grace in Jesus Christ and an inestimable privilege. We challenge every member to be intentional, not only about pledging but also about moving systematically toward the tithe and beyond it to radical generosity.

Together, we learn about the many ways God provides for us - not because we have earned God's love but because of God's grace.

As we begin to respond to this gift of God's grace, we experience a new source of joy and peace. And by sharing the good news while reaching out to a world in need with our time, talents, and dollars, we experience the abundant life Jesus described.

If you are interested in learning about how to join Memorial Drive Presbyterian Church, you are invited to attend an informational meeting Dave's Gathering to learn more about becoming a member.

If you are interested in joining Memorial Drive Presbyterian Church, you are invited to attend a New Member Class Series. Members are accepted into the Presbyterian Church by profession of faith (for those who have never been baptized), restatement of faith, or by letter of transfer from another church.

The Christian's journey is not without bumps and stumbling stones. Here, may you find a word of inspiration that gives hope, a story that shows truth, an idea to accompany you on your journey of faith.
What is my hope?
1 Peter 1:21 "Through Christ you have come to trust in God. And because God raised Christ from the dead and gave him great glory, your faith and hope can be placed confidently in God."

The resurrection, the grestest event in history, is the foundation of our hope.

1 Peter 1:3-6 "All honor to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, for it is by his boundless mercy that God has given us the privilege of being born again. Now we live with a wonderful expectation because Jesus Christ rose again from the dead. For God has reserved a priceless inheritance for his children. It is kept in heaven for you, pure and undefiled, beyond the reach of change and decay. And God, in his mighty power, will protect you until you receive this salvation, because you are trusting him. It will be revealed on the last day for all to see. So be truly glad![1] There is wonderful joy ahead, even though it is necessary for you to endure many trials for a while."

When people get motion sickness, they need to fix their eyes on the horizon in order to regain composure. Remaining fixed on a point in the distance helps us travel. Jesus' followers fix their eyes on an eternal horizon. This gives us hope in all the discomforts of daily life.
How can I have hope when times are tough?
Hebrews 10:23 "Without wavering, let us hold tightly to the hope we say we have, for God can be trusted to keep his promise."

Our hope is rooted in God's integrity and faithfulness. When everything else falls apart we can cling to the fact that God keeps His Word.

John 14:1 "Don't be troubled. You trust God, now trust in me."

John 16: 33 "I have told you all this so that you may have peace in me. Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows. But take heart, because I have overcome the world."

Our troubles do not surprise the Lord and should not surprise us. Trouble is rampant in this fallen world. Our focus should be on Jesus who has overcome this world and all it's troubles.

Isaiah 26:3-4 "You will keep in perfect peace all who trust in you, whose thoughts are fixed on you! Trust in the LORD always, for the LORD GOD is the eternal Rock."

Psalm 130:7 "O Israel, hope in the LORD;for with the LORD there is unfailing love and an overflowing supply of salvation."

Psalm 146:5-10 "But happy are those who have the God of Israel as their helper, whose hope is in the LORD their God. He is the one who made heaven and earth, the sea, and everything in them. He is the one who keeps every promise forever, who gives justice to the oppressed and food to the hungry. The LORD frees the prisoners. The LORD opens the eyes of the blind. The LORD lifts the burdens of those bent beneath their loads. The LORD loves the righteous. The LORD protects the foreigners among us. He cares for the orphans and widows, but he frustrates the plans of the wicked. The LORD will reign forever. O Jerusalem, your God is King in every generation! Praise the LORD!"

Our hope is rooted in the wonderful acts of God in creation and history. The Bible gives full testimony to the fact that God is able to deliver us from any and every circumstance. He will either get us out of it or bring us through it-for his glory and our joy.

Romans 15:13 "So I pray that God, who gives you hope, will keep you happy and full of peace as you believe in him. May you overflow with hope through the power of the Holy Spirit."

Psalm 94:19 "When doubts filled my mind, your comfort gave me renewed hope and cheer."

Romans 5:1-5 "Therefore, since we have been made right in God's sight by faith, we have peace with God because of what Jesus Christ our Lord has done for us. Because of our faith, Christ has brought us into this place of highest privilege where we now stand, and we confidently and joyfully look forward to sharing God's glory. We can rejoice, too, when we run into problems and trials, for we know that they are good for us--they help us learn to endure. And endurance develops strength of character in us, and character strengthens our confident expectation of salvation. And this expectation will not disappoint us. For we know how dearly God loves us, because he has given us the Holy Spirit to fill our hearts with his love."

Expectation builds endurance. We can get through a great deal when we realize the wonderful gifts God has for us in this life and in the life to come.

How can I cultivate a stronger hope?
Ephesians 3:20 "Now glory be to God! By his mighty power at work within us, he is able to accomplish infinitely more than we would ever dare to ask or hope."

There is a sense in which we hope and expect too little from God. If we remind ourselves of the amazing things God has already done, we will know that we have reason to expect even more from the Sovereign Lord of the Universe.

Rick believes that pastoral care is care which seeks to bring healing and wholeness in the name of Jesus Christ, and offers practical assistance when needed. Christ calls us to be his compassionate hands and feet expressing his love for all people. In living out the reality of that call, it becomes our task as faithful followers to comfort the lonely, offer hope to those in need, healing and wholeness to those who are hurting and in pain, and bring God’s peace to an anxious world.

Class discussion, lead on a rotating basis by volunteering class members, brings the wisdom of our members to the ideas of the authors. We are currently studying the Gospel of John from Eugene Peterson's The Message followed by Adam Hamilton on Post-modern Christianity.
We listen and share with one another as they talk about faith, study the Bible and explore modern religious writings together.

This class of mostly senior adults is defintely for those who love to explore the Word. The format is discussion with leadership from a teacher. The class emphasis is in exploring how the gospel transforms us into new creations: servants and heirs of the eternal promise of God. (II Corinthians 5:17 and Romans 12: 1-2) Full class discussion is always a part of every session and our class prayer is for genuine fellowship in Christ. Understanding the Bible Adult Sunday School Class
This class is comprised of men and women of various ages. It is a lecture aimed at helping adults understand the people of the Bible and what their world and culture was like. Meets in room 202.

Understanding the Bible Adult Sunday School Class MEETS AT 9:45 A.M. IN ROOM 202.

The course, taught by Bob Ross, in a lecture format, intended for all adults who are seriously interested in being able to read the Bible with real understanding. The subject matter will progress chronologically through first the Old and then the New Testament. Each "Lesson Block" can be understood on a stand-alone basis.
Present and past converge in ‘Understanding the Bible’ class. How can the Bible's ancient stories be reconciled with modern scientific thinking and its message applied to our lives today?

The fascinating thing about Bob Ross’s class on Sunday mornings is that it isn’t the dull history you might remember from high school days. Specific dates as to when Babylon, Baghdad, and Jerusalem were founded, what tribes first settled there, or who did what to whom are not points to be belabored. What we find most interesting is relating how the people lived then to what we know today. Yes, we read the Scriptures, but we don’t just stop there. There are explanations for parables, struggles for power, and much, much more. Is your curiosity piqued? The class meets at 9:45 a.m. Sundays in Room 202. Your Sunday will begin with prayer and the study of ancient and current events, all in the company of others who share the same interest. Welcome!

Acts Too
This is a new class that welcomes all adults.

Acts Too meets in room 127 at 11:15 a.m. and will move to room 202 in the year 2006

Join Acts Too class on Sundays at 11:00 a.m. in room 127.

Are you called to fellowship? The word fellowship is one with an evolving meaning as evidenced by common usage: our “Fellowship Hall” is a gathering place. In the “Fellowship of the Ring”, a disparate band joins together to attempt an impossible task. When you receive an invitation to “Come for fellowship” you know that a party is sure to follow.
Acts 2:42 describes the church’s beginning, “They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer.”

A new class, “Acts Too”, started in the fall of 2005 with the goal of creating a fellowship. Using the building blocks of scripture study, service, and social gatherings, Acts Too will focus on the teachings of Christ. The goal of this class is to model the fellowship described in Acts 2 by extracting the lessons of the scripture and then acting upon those teachings outside the classroom. The scripture lesson will take half the remaining time followed by a reflection period in small groups. As part of each 6 to 12 week study, the class will perform a service project and conclude the study with a celebration party. As Christ’s words work through us, you will belong first to Him, then to your small group of friends, to the class, to the church and finally to the world. You will be in the fellowship of Christ.

You are called to fellowship! If you are looking for a way to make that call a reality, please join us.
